Teaching again

Last summer I entered the reliquary goat into an A&S competition and won. I was pretty happy with the way the documentation turned out; not to wordy and not to sparse. I was inspired to submit a class proposal for the Fiber Arts Symposium this coming weekend in Ames Iowa.

The class is a general look at the historical flowers with a concentration on the workroom photos since I can’t put those on the web. I will then spend time in the lab area so that anyone who wants to make flowers will have the opportunity to do so. I’m hoping for some good turnout because I don’t think I’m going to find another group of people so fiber orientated again.

I’ve wondered why this art is so little recognized and what I can do to let it become more known and practiced. It’s not difficult after all – just fuzzy.

I did load all of the instructional papers I’ve written and they can be found under the beadwork tab – Silk Papers.

So Busy Again

So I’ve been working full-time for almost a year now. I’m getting ragged because there are still just as many things I want to accomplish but almost no time in which to do so.

And then to make everything more exciting we decided to move to another state. So we found a house we liked, put in an offer, jumped through the bank hoops, and now own a second home. We are currently in the process of moving to the new home. Meanwhile I am still working fulltime.

But I still want time to ART. I found an event that I think is perfect for me – The First Known World Fiber Arts Symposium in Ames, Iowa next month. So I now have the drive I need to get the flower directions written. About time right? LOL

Aside from all of that, I can show photos that I can’t put on the website. And in some strange way that sort of makes up for the fact that I’m not going to be able to see the exhibit in Lueven http://www.utopialeuven.be/en/utopia-different-perspective and see the refurbished gardens. I guess there will be time to see everything when I stop working in a couple of years.

So I should probably get moving on preparing the class.

Work vs Art

And now it’s the end of May and I’m so far behind in what I wanted to accomplish this year.

I had wanted to complete the statues for the shrine and then fill in with some additional flowers. I was going to get that done in the spring but A&S was held early this year and there just wasn’t enough time after the end-of-year rush at work in order to complete my entries for the competition. So I put it on hold but then didn’t get back to it (yet. I will get back to it eventually!)

Work has been crazy busy and, while I’m supposed to function more as a consultant, I got promoted and am now a team lead. I was hoping to be finished with my work project sometime within the next year but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen either. The company has postponed some of the key things I was there to do and so I’m functionally at a lose.

A good number of the summer plans have been set and the rest of the major ones were (again) put on hold because I never heard back from the contacts. Oh well – I’m not going to sweat it. Not much I can do about it since I don’t have much in the line of vacation time anyway. Then again – without my major work project I guess I could take the time and not worry about the consequences.

Cherries

->

Quite some time ago I proved (to my satisfaction and for my own personal edification) that the grapes in the shrines were created by covering individual cherry pits with silk fabric and stitching them together to form bunches of grapes for the shrine. These grapes then are used to represent the blood of Christ.

I was thinking about this most of last week because we went to beautiful Door County and picked 22 buckets of cherries. We brought most of them home, and actually pitted and processed 15 buckets of cherries ourselves. There are 5 to 6 quarts in each bucket and in the end I had 104 assorted size jars of canned stuff and a full assortment of frozen pies, breads and other goodies. I also had a two quart jar full of cherry pits.

I made 5 lovely jars of juice. Juice is hard to do because you have to send it through several strainers and eventually through cloth to get all of the sediment out of it. Then I put it on the stove tcherrieso get it to a  nice warm temperature, strain it through cloth one last time and then give it a hot water bath to seal it up nice and proper. And when the juice is bottled it is the most lovely clear ruby color! Pure cherry juice is, well, almost the exact same color of fresh blood. And as far as the shrines go I think the size of a cherry pit, as it correlates to a grape in relation to the flowers and other items around it, is just about perfect.

Well done medieval ladies, well done!

Yeah!

So the competition that spurred this whole project is concluded and I received the Queen’s Prize which was a huge thing for me. My final scores were 37/50, 45/50, and 46/50. Very high scores!

The statue I was carving was not even close to complete but I did have enough of it done to show that I was going to do alright with it. Very ambitious for a first carving project and the draping on the dress and face looked very good. I will have to bring it back when it is finished and has its polychrome.

The research paper kind of exceeded “research paper” and was on its way to “thesis” level. The shrine itself was simply superb and the only negative thing that could be said was that it needed to be a bit fuller since the original examples had many layers to them that my shrine was only starting to show. And honestly ~ if that’s the worst thing that could be said about it then I’m doing really well.

I did not experience my usual level of “freak out” right before this competition. I really knew where I stood with all of my projects and there was absolutely no question what-so-ever about this being a period project even if it was something no one had heard of before. Having studied the period examples I was well in my element.

I have some problems with the format and documentation requirements. I don’t think it’s realistic to ask for an in-depth paper about your entry and then give the judges approximately 10 minutes to read it or go over it. I’m a slow reader (I have a higher than average retention rate though) and I’m sure that others have similar issues. I’d like to see the documentation move toward an essay exam format where the documentation consists of answers to specific questions. Then the oral portion can be an elaboration of written answers. Something that can be comprehended and discussed in a limited period of time. I did not however get to discuss this with the other entrants so I might be the only one who feels this way.

Over all I think it was a great experience. I would rather the triathlon be a super project that is defined as one project that included elements from three or more divisions rather than separate projects. Same idea as formerly being able to cross-enter a project. It would make things easier because you could have more judges and just have to present one item.

I’d do it again. I probably will do it again. I’d like to take it to Gulf Wars next spring because that A&S competition is more of a masterwork challenge. Lots of very big projects. Perhaps. Maybe.

Less Than A Week Left

All of this research has been leading me to an Arts and Sciences Competition which will be held next weekend. The research paper is complete.

The shrine itself is nearing a completed state and should be ready in time for the competition.

The statues that go in the shrine are not as close to a completed state but should be recognizable as statues by next weekend. Everything seems to take considerably longer than I think it should. And as a result it’s not going to look the way I think it should but this is not a new state of thought for me. I have impossibly high standards for myself.

So after next weekend I will be able to post full pictures of the project and the results of the competition. Until then I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Writing

I am not a writer. I truly suck at it as I have recently discovered.

I am trying very hard to finish my research paper on the Besloten Hofje. I have some great research, fantastic photographs, and lovely ideas. I’m having difficulty pulling it all together into a comprehensive format that is readable.

Until that has been accomplished there probably will not be an update to this journal.

Other than the paper, which needs to be completed by the middle of next week, everything has been progressing nicely. I don’t think the statues are going to be polychromed in time but that isn’t going to be a huge issue. The shrine itself is going to be awesome and I will finish the construction and last dozen flowers after the paper is complete and off to the printers.

There is exactly one month left until the competition.

Back To Hitting The Books

My latest batch of library books is starting to come due and I realized I was woefully behind. I entered and scanned the parts I needed for the two due tomorrow and will complete the other two this weekend. The one I just finished had a good deal of information on the silk trade in Medieval Paris and I found it to be fascinating reading.

I contacted a parchment manufacturer last week and received a reply today. They have agreed to label the scraps so I know what they are so I can best figure out what works and what doesn’t. I’m extremely happy about this because it means I don’t have to try to figure it out based on the sample chart. I should be able to get a lot of flowers out of a pound of scraps.

I made daffodils. As far as I can see there are only daffodils in the shrine at Walsrode. And I finished a rose in white and a rose in pink – both of them in the fashion of the Arras shrine.

Tomorrow I start work on another style of rose.

Running The Silk Tests

So I decided that if I’m going to make these cute and little flowers I was going to have to use the proper silk for the job. I hate when I get myself in so deep that I start to question my ability to even swim! I’ve been staring at the photos so very long and I just knew I had to try some different silks.

So I went online and searched out the filament silks. I would prefer to have ones without twist but really hard to find.

I started with Kreinik because that is where I have purchased all of my silk so far. I have vast quantities of the stuff but it’s just not perfect you know. They did not have anything that I don’t already own.

Access Commodities has what I need but I can’t order it from them directly. They are helpful enough to post a list of US suppliers though. Some appear to be better stocked than others. There is nothing that I can just go to and get the silk though.

I placed an order with the Mad Sampler on Christmas Eve. They shipped it out on Christmas day! I was quite pleased with their prices, low shipping charges and  really fast service. I did not do too well with the colors though as it is really difficult to tell what is what on their website.

I will visit a large shop in MN next week to get more silk and hopefully many color charts for future use. I have started the comparisons and hope to have a perfect idea of what I need by the time I travel next week.

All of the tests are with filament silk. What I need to do is wrap small pieces of parchment (vellum) and a wire with the silk and then form it into petals. It is not quite as easy as it sounds but the end result should shine and have nice even lines to it. There are also petals that are stitched and petals that are just silk over a wire framework and I’m sure that different silks will have different applications with this project. I also intend to use up all of the existing silk as well.

So the results:

Kreinik Soie Perlee which is now Serica = This is a three ply tightly twisted silk of small diameter and what I’ve been using for the stitching parts of the project. I have not liked the look of it laid flat on petals and it is rather a bother to tease out the strands.

Trebizond Twisted Silk Thread = This is also a three ply twisted silk but about twice the bulk of the previous choice. Really easy to tease out the strands and pretty easy to wrap onto the petal and I’m happy with the result. Once the strands are teased out you have an exceptionally wavy thread and each ply consists of about six untwisted threads. The wave is not noticeable once the petal has been wrapped but it seems to create a visual bulk and dimension that adds appeal.

Au Ver A Soie – Soie Ovale = This is a flat untwisted silk and although it is very pretty it is also difficult to work with as the petal wrapping took significantly more time because the silk wasn’t grabbing the parchment like it should when it’s being wrapped. The end result was pretty but time consuming.

I think I will have to complete one whole flower with each of the silks and see how I feel about them at that point! And then I can really go shopping….

The 28th Is Always The Best Date For Major Events!

Happy Black Friday!

I did not go shopping today. I did have to get up kind of early though and if my purpose for getting up early was to go shopping then I would have given up and gone back to bed. Because I slipped getting into the shower and have a small bruise on the inside of my thigh. I bumped my elbow getting into the car and my hubby threw my lemonade bottle in the recycle bin so there were no extra bottles to take along. I was kind of grumpy on the two plus hour car ride because we were ten minutes late getting out the door and this was one day I really didn’t want to be late.

But we got where we were going and parked the car and filled the meter and walked through the gate and we had two minutes to spare. We met Freida and were greeted by Wim and Hanna and taken into sub basement number two. But it was a long ride so we went back up to use the bathrooms before officially starting.

So first we did introductions. Hi. I’m Jonalee and I first got interested like back in 2003 when I requested detailed photos and Wim sent them to me. My goal is to create a shrine of my own.

Hanna is doing her thesis on the flowers and the part making them plays in prayer. She has read my entire website and considers me the go-to person! She then looked up all the books on my bibliography and will send me ones I don’t have. (My bibliography includes every single book and article on the flowers even if I have never seen it. This can be helpful to others doing research on the same topic.)

Freida is an incredibly crafty person who has made flowers in many forms and went to a class in Austria with a friend of hers from Minneapolis. She has also been a textiles curator and had to rush home and finish her 18th century ball gown for the period ball tomorrow night.

So we were all on the same page and our interests in the flowers were pretty much all from the perspective of making them, who made them, where, when, why, and documenting the existing remains of flowers.

They have three of the shrines in various stages of disassembly. We were both allowed to take pictures for personal use only (as the waiver did not show up in time we almost weren’t even allowed to take pictures). They have all been restored in the past I think. But I clicked away, my husband clicked away. Mom was taking pictures of people taking pictures. It was fun. We chatted the whole time, we exchanged information. I will probably end up going to Hanna’s graduation at the rate we were going. She did her senior thesis on the Fleur which is like so up my alley. And I have to send some pictures of Herentels to Freida because she wasn’t clear on what I meant when I said those flowers were distinctly different from the rest of the ones I’ve seen.

And I’ve seen them all now except St. Lenaards and we plan to do those tomorrow.

We also stopped at Martinus on the way back because it was only 16 minutes away and see the skull reliquary. Dated from 1601 to 1700 the flowers are all glass and metal. Some fabric around the skulls themselves but narry a silk flower I sight. I will have to find out why because I’ve seen other late flowers and they are an explosion of color and very realistic looking.

I am told there are no flowers in Cologne but we may go there anyway to see the Ursula shrine.

My work here is nearly complete. I did not plan for this to happen today and it really was thrown together at the last minute because I was so very close and my timing was incredible to boot. I am one very lucky little monster. Probably because today is the 28th and all the best big stuff happens on the 28th.

And there it is.
